OSINT Report Template: Make Every Finding Traceable

Write the decision first

Before listing sources, write what the report is meant to support. “Assess the public relationship between this website and this company” is a workable assignment. “Find everything about this name” has no clear boundary or finish line.

Your opening summary should answer the assigned question at the strength the evidence permits. If the affiliation is unresolved, say that immediately. Do not bury the most consequential limitation after several pages of apparently confident findings.

Remove sections that do not serve the assignment. A two-source check may fit on a page. A complicated case may need appendices. Length does not strengthen a finding; traceable reasoning does.

Keep the evidence ledger separate from the conclusion

The ledger records what a source said or displayed. Your finding explains what that observation means. Mixing them makes it hard for a reviewer to tell where the source ends and the analyst’s interpretation begins.

This table is a synthetic teaching example. It does not describe a real company, a customer case or an output produced by OSINT Jet. The useful finding is: “The entity record supports the registered identity. Website affiliation and the changed request remain unverified.” That conclusion is deliberately narrower than the story the three observations might suggest.

Explain confidence without inventing precision

A percentage such as “92% confidence” looks authoritative, but it needs a defined method to mean anything. For ordinary research notes, explain why a finding is strong or limited: a direct source, a distinctive matching identifier, an unresolved contradiction or a historical record with uncertain current relevance.

Separate confidence in a field from confidence in a relationship. You can accurately transcribe a registered identifier while remaining uncertain about the website that displays it. An AI-generated confidence label also needs human interpretation; it does not make the underlying evidence stronger.

Three questions for each finding

• What would another researcher need to see to reproduce this reasoning?
• Which alternative explanation still fits the evidence?
• What additional source could change the conclusion?

If none of those questions has an answer, the finding may be an assertion rather than an analysis. Revisit the source or narrow the statement.

Draw relationships that can be questioned

A graph is useful when its connections have meaning. Label an edge as “listed on contact page” or “same registered identifier,” rather than an unexplained line between two names. Attach evidence IDs and distinguish observed links from proposed ones.

A practical review before sharing

1. Read the summary without the appendices. Does it answer the original question at an appropriate level of certainty?
2. Follow each significant finding back to its source. A source quoted by three websites is still one underlying source.
3. Check dates and entity names. Do not combine a former contact detail with a current profile without explaining the time difference.
4. Look for conclusions stronger than their evidence, especially identity, ownership and allegations of wrongdoing.
5. Remove unrelated personal details, credentials and material the recipient does not need.
6. Keep a version and a review date so later corrections can be distinguished from the original report.
